Found your website at last! I knew I'd put it in favourites, but why it was hiding in Links under the title Home Page I dunno. But you know what I'm like with computers... I'm better suited to banging a couple of rocks together.

Thanks for your wonderful tour of Upton. My parents live there and I always stop in at the Eagle and Crown for a bevvie when I'm back there. I have a mate, Martin, who lives in Rake Lane and it was great to learn the history of that particular street. Well done!

I came to your website in my search for Upton, and perhaps you could answer me a question concerning your home town. In about 1863 a large manor has been built in Upton for the former steamship owner Willian Inman, who owned Upton Hall (subsequently the Covent School). In about 1885 -after the death of Mr. Inman- the house was bought by Ralph Watts Leyland, a Liverpool shipowner, who was forced to sell it in 1911 to the Stern family. In 1950 the building was certainly still in existence, as it was due to change ownership again, which appeared in the Liverpool Daily Post at that time. I have no idea in what exact area it stood, but I have some very old pictures of it, unfortunately taken from its garden and not from the street. If necessary I could scan them and send them over to you. It must have been an imposing residence with 5 reception rooms and 18 bedrooms, and a small tower from which Mr Inman could see his steamships approach the Mersey before their arrival was announced by telegraph flags on Bidston Hill. There was also a considerable amount of land attached to the house. I am wondering if this building is still there ? If you knows the answer, I would be very grateful to you if you could help me with this information, and (who knows ?) a picture of it in its actual state. I hope you have the time to take a look at this subject ! Thanks a lot for your time.

Liked your image map of Wirral. Still collecting photographs for ours so it's not on line yet with the rest of the site.

Excellent site, I well remember riding into the Victory Hall, round the war Memorial, and out the other side, on a push-bike in the mid 50s, I have a copy of an old postcard in a book showing the Horse and Jockey,in the early part of the last (20th) century, it was then called the Commercial Hotel, I think. I'll dig it out, do you remember Old Mr Shone's Garage opposite the Victory hall.
